We make sure everything runs smoothly also below ground

„Given our 2,500 kilometres of sewers, we are the operator of Austria's biggest sewer system. Every day we transport half a billion litres of waste water produced by 1.9 million people from 170,000 buildings to the waste water treatment plant in the Simmering district in an environmentally sound way. Without standards we could not accomplish our tasks at the high quality level reached.“

Getting around fast, comfortably and without barriers

„The guidance system of Vienna's underground facilitates orientation in our stations and contributes to high levels of safety and efficiency. Standards ensure that our guidance systems are understandable and easy to use. Thereby, they play a major role in allowing 2.6 million passengers to get to their destination fast, safely and comfortably.“

Archives without chaos

„The holdings of the Municipal and Provincial Archives of Vienna currently have a length of 60 kilometres. Every year, they grow by around one kilometre. Without standards, there would be chaos. From the floor to the last register level, from indoor climate to digitization – we use international standards in all fields.“

Standards protect the cultural heritage of the city

„At the Vienna City Library, we could not work without standards. This begins with the cataloguing of our holdings and ranges to digitization. For example, standards ensure top scanning quality and provide a clear structure for searches on our books. Thus, they help us make available the cultural heritage of the City of Vienna also online and maintain it sustainably.“

Standards as a shining example

„Austria is the only country which has a standard dedicated to light pollution. This is very useful in case of disputes and in court. Without standards like ÖNORM O 1052, I would not be able to give an objective assessment. Light, in particular, is experienced differently by each individual.“

Good earth – thanks to standards
